What is CMS?

CMS - Content Managing System CMS is a content management.

  • They are usually in the form of a compressed file to download multiple files with php, html, CSS etc…
  • Their management is facilitated by an administrative interface accessible online
  • There is no need for special knowledge to use a CMS or HTML, or CSS, or PHP.
  • They contain a publisher to insert text, photos and other media without needing to know HTML
  • They separate the content form. We can distinguish 3 parts: the "engine" PHP, the content (often stored in a MySQL database), design.

Benefits

  • Easy installation: create a site requires more than a few minutes!
  • Ease of update: to publish an article could not be easier!
  • Advanced features: it is no longer necessary to be a programmer to have a forum, photo gallery or blog
  • Ability to work with people on the same site.
  • Scalability: Most CMS are extensible and allow the addition of features.

Disadvantages

  • We do not know what is in the "engine" since it has not developed.
  • It does not necessarily have all the features. It consumes unnecessary resources.
  • The code is accessible to all. Once vulnerability is discovered, it can be exploited and your site can be hacker. (Make updates!)

Criteria for a good CMS

A good CMS must meet a number of elements:

  • An active community
  • Some regular updates
  • A concern for safety
  • A number of basic features: RSS, comments, WYSIWYG editor (What You See Is What You Get)
  • Extensibility: ability to add "modules"
  • Using a template engine
  • Internal search engine

CMS Types

There are many types of CMS, among which are:

  • Gates: they bring together in one site a lot of games: blog, forum, gallery etc… They are perfect for creating community web sites.
  • Blogs: real systems publications, blogs can publish articles and pages easily.
  • Forums: areas of widespread discussion, they bring together a community and talk about the subject.
  • Galleries: Scripts to manage photo albums.
  • Wiki: Wikipedia, you know? The wiki are excellent tools to work collaboratively on documents.
  • ... And much more!

The best CMS

There are many CMS, but we cannot say he has a yen better than another in absolute terms. A CMS can for example very well be the case for one type of site but not another, and vice versa. Before choosing a CMS, it is very important to define its needs and objectives. Do not hesitate to test. We must also step back and look at the possible development of site we want to build and CMS (the project), check that the community is "alive" and you can find help if something goes wrong.
